Maria Grazia Chiuri is stepping down as Artistic Director Of Women’s Collections at Dior. Her exit has fuelled rumours that Jonathan Anderson, Dior’s Menswear Designer since April ’25, may take over the women’s division as well. An elaborate runway spectacle at the Villa Albani Torlonia in Rome capped Chiuri’s nine-year tenure.

Maria Grazia Chiuri Exits Dior
In a statement, Dior expressed: ‘The house of Dior wishes to express its deepest gratitude to Maria Grazia Chiuri following a wonderful collaboration as Creative Director of women’s collections since 2016. Over the course of nine prolific years, she has redefined the identity and femininity of the Dior woman, celebrated and reimagined the iconic heritage and savoir-faire, and invited a diverse range of international female artists and artisans to accompany her on this innovative, influential and endlessly inspiring journey.’
“After nine years, I am leaving Dior, delighted to have been given this extraordinary opportunity,” confirmed Maria Grazia Chiuri. I would like to thank Monsieur Arnault for placing his trust in me and Delphine for her support. I am particularly grateful for the work accomplished by my teams and the ateliers. Their talent and expertise allowed me to realize my vision of committed women’s fashion, in close dialogue with several generations of female artists. Together, we have written a remarkable and impactful chapter of which I am immensely proud.”
Delphine Arnault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Christian Dior Couture, shared her heartfelt gratitude on LinkedIn, stating: “Maria Grazia Chiuri, since her arrival at Dior, has accomplished tremendous work with an inspiring feminist perspective and exceptional creativity, all imbued with the spirit of Monsieur Dior, which allowed her to design highly desirable collections. Per BoF: ‘Estimated sales quadrupled from €2.2 billion ($2.5 billion) in 2017 to €9 billion in 2023, according to HSBC, making Dior one of luxury fashion’s fastest-growing brands. But the label has since been hit hard by a sharp downturn in luxury demand, which has prompted brands across the industry to seek new creative direction.’
Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Contribution To Dior
Maria Grazia Chiuri had a transformative impact on Dior since taking on the role of Artistic Director Of Women’s Collections in 2016. She holds the distinction of being the first woman to lead the ateliers and design teams of Christian Dior!
Chiuri has over twenty-five years experience in luxury fashion including an eight-year tenure as co-creative director of Valentino alongside Pierpaolo Piccioli. The award-winning design duo revitalised Valentino’s codes, “growing the business to reach $1 billion in revenue in 2015,’ per BoF.
The Istituto Europeo di Design alumnus successfully revitalised Dior’s heritage by combining the iconic aesthetic with contemporary perspectives. “I strive to be attentive to what is happening in the world and to create fashion that resembles the women of today. Fashion that accompanies them in their transformations, avoiding stereotypical categories of «masculine/feminine,” «young/less young,» and «reason/emotion»,” Chiuri explained at her first runway show for Dior.
Beyond gender and differences, Chiuri champions the importance of plurality and self-affirmation. Her designs often incorporate the elegance, craftsmanship, and luxurious fabrics Dior is recognised for, but she integrates them with social commentary and cultural relevance. Under Chiuri’s creative baton, Dior brought back its iconic saddle bag. She also created slogan T-shirts quoting feminists such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and late American art historian Linda Nochlin. Some popular slogan tees include “We Should All Be Feminists”, “Sisterhood Is Powerful” and “Women’s Love Is Unpaid Labour”.
The spotlight on craftsmanship is evident in her collaborations with artisans and her dedication to traditional techniques. Beyond ready-to-wear, she expanded Dior’s portfolio into accessories, footwear, and jewellery, integrating her core themes of empowerment and modern femininity into these categories. In July 2019, Maria Grazia Chiuri was awarded the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest honour.
