The acquisition brings Harvey Nichols’ six UK stores, online business and more than 1,000 employees into Frasers Group as the retail group expands its luxury portfolio.

London, UK — August 2026 — British luxury department store Harvey Nichols has been acquired by Frasers Group after entering administration, marking a major change of ownership for one of the UK’s best-known retail names.

The transaction was completed following the appointment of FTI Consulting as administrators. It includes Harvey Nichols’ six UK stores in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol, as well as its online business, inventory and more than 1,000 employees.

The acquisition strengthens Frasers Group’s growing position in luxury fashion and retail.

Frasers Group Expands Its Luxury Portfolio

Frasers Group is best known as the owner of Sports Direct, but its portfolio has expanded significantly into premium and luxury retail.

Harvey Nichols will now sit alongside businesses including Flannels, The Webster and MILE within the group’s luxury strategy. Frasers also has relationships with brands including Gucci, Prada, Moncler, Burberry and Dior.

The acquisition fits into what Frasers calls its Elevation Strategy, which aims to move more of the group’s portfolio toward premium retail and higher-end consumer experiences.

The Financial Times reported that the Harvey Nichols deal was worth roughly £40 million, although Frasers did not disclose an official purchase price in its announcement.

Harvey Nichols Faced Years of Financial Pressure

Founded in 1831, Harvey Nichols has been part of British luxury retail for almost two centuries.

However, the department store has struggled with changing shopping habits, weaker consumer confidence and pressure across the wider luxury market.

Harvey Nichols reported revenue of £184.8 million for its 2025 financial year, down from £204.9 million a year earlier. Its post-tax loss reached £48.7 million, compared with £34.1 million in 2024, according to figures shared by the company with Vogue Business.

The group had already begun repositioning the business under chief executive Julia Goddard. This included investment in the Knightsbridge flagship and efforts to strengthen its luxury proposition.

The sale now gives Frasers responsibility for completing that turnaround.

A Restructuring of Harvey Nichols Is Expected

Frasers Group has made clear that the acquisition will not simply preserve Harvey Nichols in its current form.

The company plans to review the retailer’s store portfolio, organisational structure, operating model and cost base.

Frasers Group CEO Michael Murray said the business had significant potential but would require meaningful change. He also acknowledged that Harvey Nichols could become smaller in the short term as the group works to create a more sustainable operation.

That makes the next stage particularly important for employees, luxury brands and cities where Harvey Nichols operates.

The six UK stores remain part of the transaction, but Frasers has signalled that the wider portfolio will be reviewed as part of the restructuring process.

What Happens to Harvey Nichols Internationally?

Harvey Nichols’ international franchise agreements are also included in the transaction.

Those international stores are expected to continue operating under their existing licensing arrangements.

Certain stock and fixtures at the Dublin location were also acquired. At the time of the announcement, discussions regarding that business were continuing.

The OXO Tower restaurant in London was not included and was sold separately.

What the Deal Means for British Luxury Retail

The acquisition comes at an important moment for department stores.

Luxury consumers increasingly move between physical stores, brand boutiques, online marketplaces and direct-to-consumer channels. Traditional department stores therefore need to offer more than large collections of products.

Experience, exclusivity, hospitality, brand partnerships and digital commerce have become increasingly important.

For Frasers, Harvey Nichols provides an established luxury name, prime retail locations and relationships with hundreds of premium brands.

Harvey Nichols has a portfolio of more than 800 premium and luxury brands, according to Frasers Group.

The challenge will be preserving that luxury identity while improving profitability and integrating the business into the wider Frasers infrastructure.

That balance is especially important because Frasers has had mixed results with previous acquisitions in the luxury and department-store sector. Its Matches Fashion business collapsed shortly after Frasers acquired it in 2023, while House of Fraser has undergone substantial restructuring since being purchased out of administration.

A New Chapter for Harvey Nichols

For Harvey Nichols, the acquisition ends 35 years of ownership by Dickson Poon and begins another attempt to reinvent the historic retailer for a changing luxury market.

Frasers brings scale, technology, retail infrastructure and growing influence within luxury fashion.

But the deal also comes with significant challenges.

Harvey Nichols needs to return to sustainable profitability while retaining the sense of exclusivity that has defined the brand for generations.

Its future may therefore become an important test of Frasers Group’s wider luxury ambitions.

If the turnaround succeeds, Harvey Nichols could become a cornerstone of Frasers’ growing premium retail ecosystem. If it fails, it would underline just how difficult the economics of the traditional luxury department store have become.
