Summary

The Politecnico di Milano was established in 1863 and is the largest school of architecture, design and engineering in Italy, with around 42,000 students enrolled.It is the oldest university in Milan.

The Polytechnic University of Milan has two main campuses in the city of Milan, where the majority of the research and teaching activities are located, and other satellite campuses in five other cities across Lombardy and Emilia Romagna. The central offices and headquarters are located in the historical campus of Città Studi in Milan, which is also the largest, active since 1927.

The school offers an undergraduate program in fashion design and a master’s program in ‘Design for the Fashion System’. This is part of the Department of Design of the University. The first degree course in Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano was created twenty years ago, the first of its kind in Italy.

The Politecnico di Milano has some of the lowest tuition fees among the top fashion schools in this list, ranging from €895 to €3,898 per year (~US$1,010 to $4,400), with non-EU students paying the latter amount.

Graduate Courses

The Fashion Design Degree at Politecnico offers an interdisciplinary approach to its students who can customize their education in fashion choosing from different areas of study:  from menswear, womenswear, kidswear  to  jewelry and fashion accessories, from knitwear to sportswear, underwear and beachwear. This course provides the student with the cultural, scientific, methodological and technical-instrumental elements constituting the foundation of design activities in the fashion field: from materials and technologies to product, image and comunication, 3d modeling and prototyping, management and design directions.

The Bachelor of Science prepares fashion designers. Graduates in Fashion Design can apply for positions in professional studios or companies in the fashion fields of clothing and accessories and related industries (textile, fashion, accessory, jewellery, knitwear) as well as in upholstery companies with particular reference to textile furnishing accessories (household linen and home wear).

Post Graduate Courses

The Politecnico di Milano offers first and second level University Masters of one year, including an internship period of one year in companies, businesses or professional firms.
The classroom training foresees a learning mix of class lessons, seminars and design workshops with contributions and external inputs from the world of business and the professional sector.

The Master in Accessory Design is designed, in accordance with the spirit and tradition of the Politecnico di Milano, to combine hands and mind, experimentation and tradition, technology and craftsmanship, prototype and manufacturing. For these reasons, there are 14 different design areas (handbag, shoes, eyewear, jewelry, watches, leather goods, sportswear, extreme sportswear, underwear, knitwear, hats, wearable ornaments) to be developed in 14 design workshops with professional designers. It’s a unique perspective on the world of the accessory that can provide employment opportunities in several fields .

The Master in Luxury is organized by POLI.Design, Politecnico di Milano Consortium together with Beijing Tsinghua University. This master was created in order to culturally and scientifically form new professional profiles, which are capable of understanding the changes in the fashion field and activating innovation processes in the companies for the creative, management, commercial and communication processes. In particular, the formed figures are “hybrids”, they have a multidisciplinar training, who are able to put themselves in a proactively way as intermediary between mere creative profiles and mere management profiles.
