ESMOD Dubai

The only French Fashion Institution dedicated to professional fashion education in the Middle East

Summary

ESMOD Dubai is the Dubai‑based branch of the French fashion school École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode (ESMOD), established in 2006 in Dubai International Academic City and dedicated solely to fashion education in the Middle East. Over its years of operation it has positioned itself as a key institution for grooming young fashion talent in the region and as a recruitment point for industry.

History

ESMOD’s history originates in Paris in 1841, when master tailor Alexis Lavigne founded a school to formalise professional training in fashion creation and garment construction. The Paris institution developed specialised techniques and methodological teaching practices that later shaped the global ESMOD educational model. As ESMOD gained international prestige, it began expanding worldwide, forming ESMOD International and opening campuses in key creative cities.

The Dubai branch was launched in 2006 in Dubai International Academic City. It arrived at a moment when the UAE was consolidating its position as a centre for luxury, design, and creative industries. ESMOD Dubai introduced a structured European fashion education model to a market that previously relied heavily on international study abroad pathways. Its programmes combined artistic development with technical craftsmanship, business awareness, and industry preparation.

Early in its development, ESMOD Dubai contributed to the rise of local and regional fashion entrepreneurship. Many of its graduates went on to establish independent fashion labels and design studios in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and wider Middle Eastern markets. In response to cultural and commercial needs, the school introduced dedicated programmes including modest-wear and abaya design training, which allowed students to combine creative identity with cultural relevance.

The institution also became known for its strong emphasis on couture-level construction and mastery of pattern-making. Studio-based learning, atelier environments, and training in couture finishing techniques positioned its graduates to work in both bespoke and ready-to-wear sectors. This technical focus became a defining characteristic of ESMOD Dubai’s educational identity.

Graduate fashion shows became a major platform for emerging designers, with annual presentations staged in cultural hubs such as Alserkal Avenue. These events attracted industry figures, media, and buyers, allowing graduating students to debut their collections to the public. The shows often highlighted diverse cultural influences, as ESMOD Dubai regularly attracts students from many national backgrounds.

The school continued to develop new programmes reflecting evolving industry trends. Digital fashion, footwear design, and sustainable fashion were integrated as core areas of study, aligning with shifts towards virtual design, environmentally responsible production, and ethical studio practice. These offerings reflected broader changes shaping global fashion economies. In more recent years, ESMOD Dubai has pursued further academic recognition to support international mobility for its graduates. The Fashion Design programme received initial accreditation from the Commission for Academic Accreditation in the UAE, reinforcing its institutional standing and further embedding it within the region’s educational and cultural landscape.

Vision

The vision behind ESMOD Dubai, shaped by founder and director Tamara Hostal, centres on developing designers who are both creatively expressive and professionally prepared. The institution’s philosophy encourages students to not only design garments but to understand the full cycle of the fashion industry, including production, sourcing, brand development, and market positioning. A key part of this vision is a deep respect for craftsmanship. Hostal has consistently emphasised the importance of technical precision as the foundation of a designer’s identity. Students are encouraged to refine pattern-making, cutting, and sartorial finishing as core skills, ensuring that creativity is supported by a high level of practical expertise.
