Lingerie as Nightwear May Fade by 2027 as Fashion Moves Toward Polished Intimate Dressing
06 Oct 2026

Monsoon Creative Director Caroline Jackson predicts that the nightdress-as-daywear trend will lose momentum in 2027, while lace, satin, corsetry and sheer details become integrated into more structured everyday looks.
6 October 2026 — The lingerie-as-nightwear trend that has shaped celebrity and street style throughout 2026 may be nearing its peak, according to Caroline Jackson, Creative Director at Monsoon.
Nighties and slip-style dresses have become increasingly visible outside the bedroom, helped by celebrity appearances from figures including Florence Pugh, Hailey Bieber and Olivia Rodrigo. But Jackson argues that the literal use of nightwear as streetwear is unlikely to remain as relevant in 2027.
Instead, she expects the trend to evolve into a more refined use of lingerie codes within everyday dressing.
The nightie has had a very strong moment in 2026, and I think we’ll see it remain popular through the final quarter of the year, particularly as we move into the party season, but I don’t see ‘nightwear as daywear’ having the same relevance by 2027.
The nightie trend has reached a visible peak
Throughout 2026, designers, celebrities and stylists have increasingly blurred the line between intimate apparel and outerwear.
Slip dresses, sheer fabrics and nightdress-inspired silhouettes have moved from editorial styling into mainstream celebrity wardrobes.
Florence Pugh recently added further visibility to the trend after stepping out in a nightie-style look, while Hailey Bieber and Olivia Rodrigo have also been associated with lingerie-inspired dressing during the year.
The popularity of these looks has helped make bedroom-inspired fashion one of the most recognisable styling directions of 2026.
Jackson, however, believes the trend’s current visibility does not necessarily mean the exact silhouette will have long-term staying power.
2027 could bring a more sophisticated version
Rather than disappearing altogether, the lingerie influence is expected to become more integrated into complete outfits.
Jackson predicts that 2027 styling will place less emphasis on wearing a nightdress as the entire look and more emphasis on individual details.
What I do think has longevity is the lingerie influence behind it, which we’re already seeing evolve for 2027 trend predictions, with lingerie being styled as part of an outfit rather than becoming the entire outfit.
That could mean lace or satin paired with tailoring, visible bras worn beneath structured jackets, sheer layers combined with more considered silhouettes and corsetry used as part of everyday styling.
This evolution would move the trend away from novelty and closer to a permanent part of womenswear design.
Lace, satin and sheer fabrics are likely to stay
Jackson identifies the materials and construction associated with lingerie as the part of the trend most likely to survive.
The novelty of wearing a nightdress as streetwear will inevitably wear off, but the fashion language of lingerie, lace, satin, sheer fabrics, corsetry and a little glimpse of skin has much more staying power.
These elements already extend well beyond nightwear.
Sheer fabrics have become increasingly common in eveningwear and occasion dressing, while corsetry has been reworked across dresses, tops and tailoring. Satin and lace also move easily between lingerie, partywear and more formal wardrobes.
That flexibility makes the visual language of lingerie much more durable than a single viral silhouette.
Tailoring could become the key contrast
One of the strongest directions Jackson highlights is the pairing of lingerie-inspired pieces with more structured clothing.
A lace camisole beneath a blazer, an exposed bra under tailoring or a sheer layer over a sharper silhouette creates a different effect from wearing an actual nightdress as streetwear.
The contrast allows designers and wearers to retain intimacy and sensuality while making the overall look feel more deliberate.
This also fits with a wider shift toward styling that mixes softness with structure.
The result is less literal and potentially easier to incorporate into everyday wardrobes.
From bedroom visibility to polished intimacy
Jackson summarises the evolution as a transition from exposure to integration.
For me, 2026 has been about making the bedroom visible, and 2027 I can see will be about bringing those intimate details into a more polished, grown-up wardrobe.
That distinction is important.
Fashion trends often survive not because their original form remains unchanged, but because their most recognisable elements are absorbed into broader design language.
The nightdress itself may become less dominant, while the materials and construction techniques associated with it continue influencing mainstream fashion.
Celebrity dressing has accelerated the trend
Celebrity fashion has played a major role in making lingerie-inspired dressing visible.
Pugh’s approach has been particularly notable because her style often combines glamour with more unconventional or punk-influenced choices.
Bieber’s use of lingerie-inspired eveningwear and Rodrigo’s babydoll silhouettes have also reinforced the idea that intimate clothing can function as complete public-facing fashion.
Those examples matter because celebrity styling often accelerates trends already emerging on runways or in editorial fashion.
However, celebrity visibility can also shorten a trend’s lifespan by pushing it quickly toward saturation.
That may be part of the reason Jackson expects the literal nightie look to decline after 2026.
A broader shift in how intimate clothing is worn
The rise of lingerie-inspired outerwear is also part of a longer fashion cycle.
Corsets, slips, lace trims and transparent fabrics have repeatedly moved between underwear and outerwear over several decades.
What changes is the way they are styled.
In 2026, the emphasis has been on making the intimate garment itself highly visible. Jackson’s forecast suggests 2027 may move toward a more blended approach, where lingerie references become one layer within a larger outfit.
That could make the trend more wearable for a wider audience.
The trend may fade, but the influence will remain
Jackson’s prediction is not that lingerie will disappear from fashion.
Rather, she expects the most literal version of the trend to lose relevance.
That distinction makes the forecast more plausible as a fashion cycle.
A nightdress worn directly as streetwear may eventually feel tied to a specific moment, but lace, satin, sheer panels and corsetry are flexible enough to continue evolving.
For designers and retailers, the opportunity therefore lies not in repeating the 2026 look but in finding new ways to carry those details forward.
