From collaborating with Walter Van Beirendonck and Pharrell Williams to Marc Newson and Ottolinger, G-STAR’s commitment to creativity and denim innovation speaks for itself. Today, the fashion brand is entering a new journey together with Dutch-Caribbean design duo Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh, joining us as creative directors.
G-Star Names Rushemy Botter And Lisi Herrebrugh As Creative Directors
Following in the footsteps of Aitor Throup, the duo will reintroduce Raw Research, the brand’s most experimental denim collection. This is where they challenge conventions, push boundaries, and transform bold ideas into designs. Alongside Raw Research, Botter and Herrebrugh will integrate their creativity into the seasonal collections. A first glimpse of their take will be unveiled in June, and the first Raw Research collection will be shown during Paris Fashion Week in January 2026.
Botter studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, mentored by Antwerp Six legend Walter Van Beirendonck. Herrebrugh, meanwhile, is a cum laude graduate of AMFI and kickstarted her design career at Viktor & Rolf. Together, the two founded their own label, BOTTER, while serving as creative directors at Nina Ricci. The design duo is recognised for challenging the conventions of contemporary fashion, with collections focusing on cultural commentary, innovation, and sustainability.
For Botter and Herrebrugh, this partnership is an opportunity to reconnect with their past and influence the future. “We have great memories of G-STAR from the late ‘90s,” the duo says. “The designs, the styles we wore, and the influence the brand had on denim culture. It’s an exciting opportunity to now be part of this next chapter.”
About G-STAR
Based in Amsterdam, G-STAR has been dedicated to the cloth, the craft, and the culture of denim since 1989. Driven by creativity, the fashion brand turns ideas into denim while forging their own distinctive path. The team introduced untreated and raw denim to the fashion industry, elevating the fabric into a mature and sophisticated material. They also led the way in creating 3D denim, a first in fashion construction. Their relentless pursuit of innovation has earned us a unique position in the fashion landscape, allowing us to transform denim into a force for progress. For both people and the planet.
Rooted in denim culture, the brand challenges everything when it comes to the fabric. They constantly push boundaries and dare conventions, with creativity at the core of everything we do. Always looking towards the future, they’re committed to bringing innovations season after season. They don’t ask why. They ask why not. Because to them, there’s no limit to what denim can do.
Everything begins in the atelier, where the brand continuously experiment with constructions and fabrications. Beyond seasons and trends, they strive for creativity, authenticity and innovation. Always following their own path. Through every stitch, and through every detail. From fabrics to finishings, they pay homage to their distinctive heritage and define the next generation of denim.
G-STAR is committed to innovating and reducing their impact to become a future-proof brand that creates future-proof products. They collaborate with expert partners to accelerate change and develop sustainable solutions for the future of fashion. It’s an ongoing journey and a way of living. Constantly searching for the next steps into a greener future and challenging the status quo. In 2018, they introduced the world’s first Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold denim fabric. Today, they’re leading the way with the first-ever cotton grown in a local greenhouse. And they don’t stop.
In their quest for creative exploration, we partner with visionaries from diverse backgrounds. From trailblazers like Pharrell Williams, Anton Corbijn, Snoop Dogg, Burna Boy, and Cara Delevingne. To avant-garde fashion designers like Marc Newson, Walter Van Beirendonck, and Stephen Jones. They also collaborate with the world’s best across unconventional fields, like chess player Magnus Carlsen and world champion gymnast Rhys McClenaghan. They are inspired by the world of design and art, which results into special projects such as a furniture collection reviving the designs of Jean Prouvé with Vitra, and the private jet made of denim waste by Maarten Baas.
Who Are Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh?
Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh are celebrated for their innovative approach to fashion that intertwines Caribbean heritage with contemporary aesthetics. Botter, born in Curaçao and raised in the Netherlands, pursued fashion studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he was mentored by Walter Van Beirendonck and Dirk Van Saene. Herrebrugh, born in Amsterdam to a Dominican mother and Dutch father, graduated cum laude from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute and honed her skills during an internship at luxury fashion brand Viktor & Rolf. Their shared multicultural backgrounds deeply influence their creative vision, leading them to co-found the menswear label BOTTER in 2017.
BOTTER quickly gained acclaim for its unique aesthetic of Caribbean-inspired designs and social commentary. In 2018, the duo was a finalist for the LVMH Prize and won the Première Vision Grand Prize at the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography. Their collections often address pressing issues such as environmental degradation and cultural identity, exemplified by their “Fish Or Fight” collection, which highlighted the impact of industrial fishing on Caribbean communities. In 2022, BOTTER won the prestigious Andam Grand Prize, with the designers pledging to invest the €300,000 award into sustainable initiatives, including the development of biotextiles and the management of a coral nursery in Curaçao.
In 2018, Botter and Herrebrugh were appointed as artistic directors of the French fashion house Nina Ricci, marking a significant milestone as they brought a fresh, modern perspective to the luxury fashion brand’s legacy. Their tenure at Nina Ricci was noted for integrating the luxury label with vibrant colours and contemporary silhouettes, reflecting their Caribbean roots and innovative design ethos. After three and a half years, they departed from Nina Ricci in January 2022 to focus on expanding BOTTER.
